Winter (December–February): Manatee Season

Winter is one of the best times to spot Florida's beloved manatees. As water temperatures drop, these gentle giants gather in warm-water springs, rivers, and coastal areas throughout the state.

Popular places to see manatees include:

Hundreds of manatees can often be seen resting and feeding in clear waters, making winter the prime season for viewing these endangered marine mammals.

Winter is also a great time to spot dolphins along Florida's coasts, as cooler temperatures often bring them closer to shore.

Spring (March–May): Sea Turtle Nesting Begins

As temperatures warm, Florida's beaches become busy with sea turtle activity. Spring marks the beginning of nesting season for several species, including the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Green Sea Turtle, and Leatherback Sea Turtle.

Female turtles emerge from the ocean at night to lay eggs in sandy nests above the high tide line. While nesting activity peaks later in the summer, spring offers the first opportunities to witness this remarkable annual migration.

Spring is also an excellent season for snorkeling and diving, as many reef fish become more active in warming waters.

Summer (June–August): Peak Marine Life Activity

Summer is arguably Florida's most exciting season for ocean wildlife enthusiasts. Warm waters attract a huge variety of marine species, and many animals are at their most active. Longer daylight hours and calm ocean conditions also make this an ideal time for boating, snorkeling, diving, and wildlife tours. Coastal waters teem with activity as fish, rays, sea turtles, and other marine creatures take advantage of the abundant food sources available during the warmer months. Whether you're exploring coral reefs, visiting the beach, or heading offshore, summer offers some of the best opportunities of the year to observe Florida's rich marine biodiversity.

Sea Turtle Hatchlings

One of the most magical wildlife events in Florida occurs during the summer months. Sea turtle eggs laid earlier in the season begin to hatch, and tiny hatchlings make their way toward the ocean under the cover of darkness.

Popular nesting beaches include:

Whale Sharks

Although sightings are rare, summer offers some of the best chances to encounter a Whale Shark in Florida waters, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico. As the largest fish in the world, whale sharks can grow over 40 feet long and feed primarily on plankton.

Fall (September–November): Sharks and Migratory Species

As water temperatures begin to cool, many marine animals start seasonal migrations.

Shark Sightings

Fall can be an excellent time to observe shark activity, especially along Florida's Atlantic Coast. Species commonly spotted include:

These sharks often migrate in large groups and can sometimes be seen from beaches, piers, and boats. Read more about different species of sharks here!

Marine Life You Can See Year-Round

Some ocean animals can be found throughout the year in Florida waters.

Dolphins

Several species of dolphins inhabit Florida year-round, making them one of the most reliable marine animals to spot. Whether you're on a boat tour or simply walking along the beach, dolphins are often seen feeding, jumping, and socializing near shore.

Seahorses

Florida's seagrass beds provide habitat for various seahorse species. Although small and difficult to find in the wild, they remain active throughout the year.

Reef Fish

Colorful fish such as angelfish, butterflyfish, wrasses, and parrotfish can be observed year-round on Florida's reefs and in many aquariums.
